As of the census^[6] of 2000, there were 158,383 people, 55,966 households, and 43,261 families residing in the county. The population density was 396 people per square mile (153/km²). There were 58,692 housing units at an average density of 147 per square mile (57/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 94.66% White, 2.73% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 55,966 households out of which 39.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.20% were married couples living together, 8.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.70% were non-families. 18.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the county, the population was spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 34.00% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 9.40% who are 66 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there were 102.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $57,952, and the median income for a family was $64,692. Males had a median income of $47,027 versus $30,862 for females. The per capita income for the county was $25,517. About 3.00% of families and 4.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.40% of those under age 18 and 4.70% of those age 65 or over.

Transportation

Highways

Interstates 71 and 75 pass through the county as do U.S. Highway 22/Ohio 3 and U.S. Highway 42. Other major highways through the county are State Routes 28, 48, 63, 73, 122, 123, 132, 350, and 741. Interstate 71 crosses over the Little Miami River at the Jeremiah Morrow Bridge, the tallest bridge in Ohio.

Airports

Warren County has one public airport, designated as Lebanon-Warren County Airport (KI68/I68). The runway is a 4502' x 65'paved and lighted North-South runway (01/19), and parallel taxiway. Navigation and communications equipment includes PAPI, AWOS,Pilot Controlled Lighting, and Unicom. The airport runway, taxiway, and navigation equipment is owned by the County. The county leases a public terminal, but other facilities are owned and operated under contract by a private Fixed base operator. The airport serves general and business aviation, but has no commercial airlines.

There are also three privately owned airports in the county; Waynesville airport, also know as Red Stewart Field (K40I/40I), Caesar's Creek Gliderport, and Brownies Lebanon Airport.

Rail and Bus

Warren County does not currently have passenger train service except for a scenic train that runs between Lebanon and Mason. Freight trains still serve Carlisle, and on a limited basis, Monroe, Mason, and Lebanon. Historically, there have been several trains that ran through the county whose stops became cities and villages. These trains include the Cincinnati, Lebanon and Northern Railway, the Middletown and Cincinnati Railroad, and the Little Miami Railroad whose path is now replaced by the Little Miami Bike Trail. There have been proposals to run commuter trains from Cincinnati to the Kings Island area, but none have ever found sufficient support or funding.^[7]

There is no public bus transportation based in Warren County, but there is limited service from Cincinnati to Mason and Kings Island. Middletown also runs bus service to eastern portions of Middletown that are located in Warren County.

Waterways

There are currently no commercially navigable waterways in Warren County, but the Warren County Canal did operate in the 19th century as a branch of the Miami and Erie Canal,bringing freight to Lebanon by Canal Boat. Recreationally, the Little Miami River can be traveled by canoe or kayak for it's length through the county, and motorized boating can be done at Caesar's Creek Lake.

Media

The Middletown Journal circulates in Franklin, Springboro, Lebanon, and Turtlecreek Township. The Dayton Daily News, which is printed in Franklin, circulates in the northern part of the county. The Cincinnati Enquirer circulates through most of the county while the Cincinnati Post abandoned all distribution in the county in 2004.

Among its weekly papers are The Western Star, the oldest weekly in the state and the oldest newspaper west of the Appalachians published under its original name. It, like the Pulse-Journal in Mason and the Star-Press in Springboro, are owned by the parent of the Middletown Journal and the Dayton Daily News, Cox Communications. Other weeklies include the Franklin Chronicle.

For a time in the mid-1990s, Lebanon was the home of a commercial radio station, WMMA-FM, 97.3, but its owners sold out and the new owners moved the station to Hamilton County. The only radio station in the county is WLMH-FM, a student-run station at Little Miami High School in Hamilton Township.

Warren County is assigned to the Cincinnati television market, but Dayton television stations treat it as part of their market as well.

Politics

Warren County is staunchly Republican and has been since the party was established in the 1850s. Since the first presidential election after its founding, 1856, Warren County has supported the Republican candidate for president all but once, the exception being 1964 when Warren County voted for Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson over Barry M. Goldwater. Before the Republican party was formed, Warren County supported the Whigs. Since 1869, Warren County has almost always supported the Republican candidate for Governor of Ohio, the exceptions being in 1924 when it supported Vic Donahey, 1932 (George White), 1952 (Frank Lausche), and 1958 (Michael V. DiSalle). However, excepting DiSalle, each of these four Democrats, who were all victorious statewide, was a conservative Democrat.

In local races, Warren County occasionally elected Democrats. In 1976, two of the three county commission seats were won by Democrats. Until the mid-1990s, Democrats regularly ran for county offices and, while almost always losing, did not do so badly. However, with the massive expansion in population in the 1990s, the county became extremely Republican, so much so the Democrats fail to field any candidates. In the 1996, 2000, and 2004 elections, in which eight county offices were on the ballot, there were no Democratic candidates for any of them. In November 1999, the last Democrat to hold office in Warren County, a member of the Educational Service Center (county school board), lost her seat to a Republican.

Colleges and Universities

Warren County has no native colleges or universities, but was the original site selected for Miami University which instead located in Oxford, Ohio in 1809. National Normal University, a teachers college, was located in Lebanon from 1855 until 1917 when it closed. Several colleges currently offer classes in Warren County at various locations, including Sinclair Community College of Dayton, the University of Cincinnati, and Wilmington College. Sinclair opened a branch in the Mason area in 2007. The University of Cincinnati owns 398 acres of land^[8] at the intersections of I-71 and Wilmington road, but no plans for development on the site have been announced.

Lebanon is a city in Warren County, Ohio, United States. The population was 16,962 at the 2000 census, and an estimated population as of July 2006 of 20,346. It is the county seat of Warren County^[3]. It was named after the Biblical Lebanon because of the many juniper or Eastern Redcedar trees there, similar to the Lebanon Cedar. It is known today as "The Cedar City". Lebanon is widely becoming known as a tourist attraction, with its many points of interest. The Warren County Historical Museum is recognized as one of the nation's most outstanding county museums. The Glendower State Memorial, erected between 1836 and 1840, provides a classic example of residential Greek Revival architecture and a natural setting for many elegant Empire and Victorian furnishings from Warren County's past. The city boasts a fine symphony orchestra and chorus, highly unusual among municipalities of this size. Lebanon is also home to the Turtle Creek Valley Railway, where passengers follow an old stage coach route passing meadow, pasture, a rippling creek and wildflowers along the way. Shopping has even become an art in Lebanon, boasting over 80 specialty shops offering one-of-a-kind antiques, furniture, fine art, jewelry, collectables, distinctive clothing and much more. Although an old small town in its own right, it serves as a suburban bedroom community of Cincinnati.

 Mason is a city in southwestern Warren County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2000 census, Mason's population was 22,016. It was the fastest-growing and most populous city in the county. Until February 1997, it was part of Deerfield Township.

Geography

Mason is located at 39°21'29?N, 84°18'43?W (39.358009, -84.311822)^[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.6 square miles (45.7 km²), of which, 17.6 square miles (45.6 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.23%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[2] of 2000, there were 22,016 people, 7,789 households, and 5,981 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,250.0 people per square mile (482.7/km²). There were 8,111 housing units at an average density of 460.5/sq mi (177.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.79% White, 1.61% African American, 0.19% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.

There are 7,789 households 45.2% of which have children under the age of 18, 67.5% have married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 20.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 persons and the average family size was 3.27 persons. The city has a broad range of residents with 32.1% under the age of 18, 5.1% between 18 to 24, 35.3% between 25 to 44, 19.1% between 45 to 64, and 8.4% over the age of 65. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $65,968, and the median income for a family was $75,697. Males had a median income of $52,795 and females had a median income of $32,457. The per capita income for the city was $29,109. About 1.6% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.8% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.

The city is in the Mason City, Kings Local, and Lebanon City School Districts. The entire city is in the Mason telephone exchange. Mail is provided through the Mason, Kings Mills, Lebanon, and Maineville post offices.

Kings Island amusement park, The Beach waterpark, Great Wolf Lodge Hotel/Indoor Waterpark, Procter & Gamble's Mason Business Center, the headquarters of Luxottica Retail, Cintas corporate headquarters, and the historic Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament are all located in Mason.

According to CNN Money the City of Mason is one of the top 100 places to live in the United States.

Despite being in an urban area, it is served by two interstates, I-71 and I-75.

Media

Mason is part of the Cincinnati media market. Although no broadcast stations are licensed to Mason itself, the city is home to the transmitter site of Clear Channel Communications' WLW (700 Cincinnati), which uses one of only seven remaining Blaw-Knox diamond-shaped towers.

Education:

Mason City Schools have been ranked among the top in Ohio's school systems. Due to this, the city has been popular among new residents.

The Mason City School district has received many Ohio Blue Ribbons for Excellence. The class of 2006 was exceptional in that it graduated four students who will attend the ivy leagues, and 14 students who were national merit scholars or commended merit scholars. The class of 2007 has 20 members who were national merit scholars or commended merit scholars. The William Mason HS Wind Symphony was invited in 2004 to perform at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, recognized as the most prestigious high school concert band performance in the world. Mason High School is also home to the United States' first competitive junior broomball league, according to broomball.com. School programs are also successful at the state level, with the girls basketball team being the state champions in 2000, the girls track team were state champions in 2004, the Mock Trial Team being the state runner-ups in 2006 and the debate team placing first in 2005. Mason currently has 6 public schools: Mason Early Childhood Center (PK - 1), Mason Heights, Western Row(grades 2-3), Mason Intermediate(grades 4-6), Mason Middle School( grades 7-8), and Mason High School. Mason also has a community center that connected to the High School. The last building to open was the MECC which opened in 2006. Mason City Schools has one of the fastest school networks in Ohio operating over 1,700 times faster than the standard home Internet connection while supporting over 3,200 classroom computers. There are approximately 3 students per computer in the district. The district also supports individual teacher pages for posting of work assignments and other class information. Parents have secure web access to student grades, transportation information, lunch account balances, and more. The next building project is scheduled to beginning on March 3, 2008 with an addition to the high school, that was built in 2001. The addition will include an additional 3 story pod that will add 3 additional computer labs.

History

Lebanon is in the Symmes Purchase. The first settler in what is now Lebanon was Ichabod Corwin, uncle of Thomas Corwin, who came to Ohio from Bourbon County, Kentucky and settled on the north branch of Turtle Creek in March 1796. The site of his cabin is now on the grounds of Berry Intermediate School on North Broadway and is marked with a monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The town was laid out in September 1802 on land owned by Ichabod Corwin, Silas Hurin, Ephraim Hathaway, and Samuel Manning in Sections 35 and 35 of Town 5, Range 3 North and Sections 5 and 6 of Town 4, Range 3 North of the Between the Miami Rivers Survey.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 square miles (30.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

Estimated population as of July 2006 is 20,346. As of the census^[2] of 2000, there were 16,962 people residing in the city. The population density was 1,440.6 people per square mile (556.4/km²). There were 6,218 housing units at an average density of 528.1/sq mi (204.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.98% White, 6.36% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population.

There were 5,887 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 36.8% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 110.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $46,856, and the median income for a family was $52,578. Males had a median income of $40,361 versus $27,551 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,897. About 4.7% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.6% of those under age 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.

The city had 10,461 people in 1990, 9,636 in 1980, 7,934 in 1970, 5,993 in 1960, 4,618 in 1950, 3,890 in 1940, 3,396 in 1920, and 2,867 in 1900.

Services

Lebanon lies largely within the Lebanon telephone exchange, but parts are in the Mason and South Lebanon exchanges. Local and long distance telephony services for the city are primarily provided by Embarq (formerly Sprint's local telephony division).

The city is one of the handful in the nation that operates a government-run cable television, telephone, and Internet service provider. Controversial since it began operation in 1999, the Lebanon telecommunications system has struggled to recover its expenses and has accumulated over $8 million in debt. However, residents pay up to 50% less for services than neighboring communities due to the competition, and over $40 million has been saved by the residents in reduced rates. In the 2006 general election, however, voters approved the sale of the city-run telecommunications system to Cincinnati Bell.

Golden Lamb

The Golden Lamb Inn is located in Lebanon on the corner of S. Broadway and Main St. It is recognized as the Ohio's oldest inn being established in 1803. This inn has been visited by 12 presidents.

Lebanon Raceway

Lebanon Raceway, at the Warren County Fairgrounds, has conducted live harness racing for decades. It also offers simulcasting of races throughout North America.
